Monte slowly began to regain his vision as the bright lights burned into his brain. He was in a surgical gown, laying on his back and strapped to a table by his wrists and ankles. Struggling proved to be fruitless. His head was still pounding with pain from being hit from behind. Once his vision fully adjusted he saw that he was in a small infirmary. Various metal cabinets lined the wall with various supplies and tools used for medicinal purposes. Closer to him was a metal table that contained a scalpel and other cutting instruments. There was also a very large crate by the only door in the room that had postage from the Baroness.

Monte could hear the all familiar sound of an engine humming nearby.

Monte rolled his eyes at his predicament. Not again!

He pulled his shoulder muscles tight and relaxed them; trying to stress out the bonds holding his wrists. A sharp searing pain stabbed him behind the left eyeball and he winced. Great. Hangover without the joys of the previous night. What did I ever do to deserve this?

Thoughts ran through his mind as he scanned his dungeon. There was a problem with the NavComp. My gear was still on the Roisin. But I'm not. No. A ship, yes, but the room wasn't onboard the ship I'm was assigned to. Would they come looking? Where would they start? Chances are, I'm lost to them.

He sighed deeply. His head turned toward the table with the tray of cutters. Was it within reach? He shifted his shoulders, making room to roll toward the edge closest to the table. He could feel his back stretching, but would it be enough? He rolled back and forth, each time stretching a little further. Each roll seemed to bring him closer to the edge, and his opposite arm was starting to ache even more, as he moved further to one side.

Finally, he could almost look the edge of the tray eye to eye. He strained his neck, bringing his head over to the edge, his teeth mere inches from one of the scalpels, his tongue reaching out to tease it within reach...

Suddenly the doors whizzed open as a a rather small man wearing a white lab coat with glasses and a surgical mask entered. He pulled the table with the instruments away from you and proceeded to push a lever to lower the bed you were on. The bed slowly lowered as the doctor spoke in a soft german accent.

"Ah Heir Jacob. I have been waiting for you, Jacob. You were to meet me at the Baroness last week but you failed me. So now we must move quickly. We are behind schedule!" He took a syringe and jabbed it into your arm, pumping the liquid into you before pulling it out and cleaning your arm. "All done.." You could sense he was smiling under his mask.

"Jacob let us not play games. You signed an agreement to receive the virus for testing purposes in exhange for 1000 platnium. You understood this could result in death. It will take a day before the symtoms set in. By doing this, we may save millions from the virus that is starting on Ariel. We need a host to create a vaccine and save the lives of those on the Core, and you are that host!"

He walked over to the sink and began to wash his hands.

Monte looked up frantic. "NO!! You have it all wrong. I'm not this Jacob! My name is Monte Furlong. I have no idea what you're doing to me. I didn't volunteer for no drug test! Let me out and get this go tsao de gos se out of me!"

"IT'S TOO LATE JACOB!" The Doctor lost his composure a moment before collecting himself. "The money was already transferred to your acount. Should you survive the virus you will be a very rich man. I am putting you under in a few moments and then you won't feel all the tests." He walked over to a cabinet and started to pull out a tank with a mask attached to it. He placed the mask on Monte's face and turned the knob causing the gas to flow.

Monte felt very sleepy as his eyes became heavy. He then drifted off into a deep sleep.

Monte woke up in a large tube that was shaped like a cylinder with all sorts of IV's in his arm. He began to panic as the sound of his pulse quickening could be heard on a nearby monitor. Waking up quickly from an induced sleep never went over well. A mask was strapped to his face that provided precious oxygen. The compartment to the tube was open and once his vision was restored he saw that the lights were flickering on and off and that there was a large amount of red liquid splattered on the wall near the door. The room itself was small, with only one exit and bare exept for the monitoring device and tube that he found himself in.

Monte took a number of deep breaths, holding them and releasing them slowly, willing his heart to slow back down. He concentrated on the stain on the wall, trying to analyze it through the plexiglass cover. Careful, boy, keep your wits about you. If that red stain is any indication, things outside this tube are worse than inside.

He checked his wrists, seeing if there were any bonds still restraining him. If not, perhaps he could push the lid open...

Once Monte came to his senses he realized the compartment to the tube was already open. He also observed that he was no longer restrained at this time.

Monte pushed himself up and looked further around the small room before stepping out of the tube. A gentle tug reminded him of the face mask and he gently removed it, checking to make sure there was fresh air in the compartment before discarding the mask.

He then pulled the IVs out of his arms, patting the sore spots where the needles had been inserted. He then stepped to the door and touched the red stain there, testing its viscosity and texture.

[- is the door open or closed? -]

As the lights flickered, Monte looked at the red sticky substance on his fingers. It was blood, a lot of it. Through the open door he could see a long hallway to the right. The ceiling lights flickering made it hard to see where he was going.

Monte looked to the left to make sure he was at the end of the corridor. Satisfied that no one can get behind him, he shifts forward to the first door, checking it.

These lights make it like an old strobe movie. Ok, let's think about this. I'm on a ship, and not one I'm familiar with.

The door opened up to a similar room with a cylinder tube that was closed. There was no one in it. If he were to go further down the hallway and check each door, there would be approximately 8 rooms that looked that same. Large trails of blood led to the end of the hallway to a sign against the wall that read Bridge with two large metal doors. The doors were slightly ajar with bloody hand prints on it.

Monte paused outside the door and listened carefully. No sense in charging in on a conversation. The quiet, however was deafening. He took the edge of the door in his left hand and pulled slowly, hoping that there would be no creaking noise to announce his entrance.

He stepped through...

The door slid open as Monte's bare feet stepped in a sticky pool of blood. He was then hit with an overwhelming foul stench. The flickering lights allowed a glimpse of the room every few seconds. It was a large and spacious bridge with consoles and chairs everywhere. A single chair was at the forefront and was directly in front of a large helm window. There was a small console on the arm of the chair with a blinking red light. Through the window Monte could see the vastness of space, with nothing else in sight.

As the light flickered again, he saw them. Bodies. Bodies in their seats, their twisted faces representing the pain and horror they must have felt before death. Massive amounts of blood covered the area. All their intestines were hanging out of there mouths as if they some how vomitted them up. A lone body was sprawled out on the floor in a white lab coat. You could see the body twitching and gurgling. A closer inspection revealed it was the scientist that gave you the shot. He was still alive, his eyes looking up at you heavily as he coughed up his intestines in a bloody mess.

Monte stepped gingerly into the room, standing over the lab coat. "What a mess. Are you still sure you have the right man? Is there anything left for me to do? Did your tests succeed or fail?" He bent down to get as close to the man's eye level. "Is this the result your were looking for?"

After a moment, he straightens and walks to the console, looking it over for any indication of where the ship might be, whether it is running on auto pilot or adrift in space.

As Monte approached the console he could still hear the man twitching and gagging behind him. The console had bloody finger prints on it. On the screen it read, Captains Log. Review entry? Y/N?

Monte taps the "Y" key and reviews the last entry.

Captain's Log - last recorded 10 hours ago.

All 14 subjects have died within hours of injection. The immune system doesn't hold off well against the Virus. It causes the internal organs to burst and induces vomitting almost an hour after injection, then death comes shortly after. Longest period of resistance was 3 hours with Subject #4. Subject #15 will be arriving shortly. We are starting to lose hope for immunization.

Captain's Log - last recorded 1 hour ago

This is my last entry. We have failed, it has taken the ship. One of the scientists came into contact with the Virus by cutting his hand on a broken vial that was used to inject Subject #15. It then took to the others and then me. I don't have much time left. I have initiated emergency containment procedures. As per protocol this log and all the research contained on this disk will be safely ejected for future research while the ship proceeds with the self destruct sequence. Tell my wife, I love her. Chief Medical Officer Ian Keats, signing off.

The Captain laid dead below the table in front of him, his intestines spilled out in front of him. Monte felt an itch on his arm and noticed a band with the number #15 on his wrist. The ship was spinning lifeless through space as indicated by the powered down system. A small timer was displayed on a dimly lit console that was counting down from 15 minutes.
